The Organisation’s New Identity Is an Evolution, Not a Revolution

Our organisation is entering a new stage of its development. Following thorough deliberation and an assessment of our operations to date, we have proceeded with a change of the organisation’s name. The original name “Slovenský zväz vojakov v zálohe a športovo-branných aktivít” will be replaced by “Slovenská asociácia rezervistov“, abbreviated as “SAR“. For international communication, the organisation will use the English version of the name: Slovak Association of Reservists.

This change does not imply a change in our mission or values. On the contrary, its purpose is to better express the organisation’s identity, to eliminate longstanding ambiguities, and to establish a clear and modern framework for further development.

Why a Name Change Was Necessary

Clarity and Unambiguity

One of the primary reasons for the name change was the longstanding ambiguity and frequent confusion of our organisation with other entities. The most common source of confusion was with the Union of Soldiers of the Slovak Republic (Zväz vojakov Slovenskej republiky), which is an independent organisation with a distinct history and mission.

This similarity in names caused misunderstandings in communication with the public, partners, and the media. The new name, Slovak Association of Reservists, clearly and unambiguously identifies whom the organisation brings together and whom it represents.

Inconsistency Between the Name, Abbreviation, and Visual Identity

A further issue was a significant inconsistency between the organisation’s official name, its commonly used abbreviation, and its visual identity.

he official name was excessively long, which in practice led to the use of the abbreviation SZVvZ – an abbreviation that did not correspond to the organisation’s full name and therefore caused confusion. At the same time, the organisation’s logo featured the designation “Zväz vojakov v zálohe”, which did not match the complete official name.

Such inconsistency created communication problems and reduced the organisation’s external transparency.

The new name makes it possible to establish a clear and unified organisational identity – in the name, the abbreviation, and the visual presentation alike.

Practical Problems in the Use of the Name

The length and complexity of the original name also caused practical difficulties in the organisation’s day-to-day operations. In many instances, the organisation’s own officials would shorten the name to the simpler form “Slovenský zväz vojakov v zálohe”.

Such shortening was, however, incorrect, as it constituted an unofficial and legally improper form of the organisation’s name. Documents in which this modified name was used may be problematic from a legal standpoint, as they do not contain the precise name of the legal entity.

The name change therefore also brings greater legal certainty and unambiguity in official communications.

The New Name as a Natural Step in the Organisation's Development

This is by no means the first name change in the organisation’s history. Just as the organisation evolved and took shape over time, its name — as well as its organisational structure — underwent gradual changes.

In its early days, the organisation always operated solely as a constituent unit of a larger body — whether as part of Zväzarm or the Association of Technical and Sports Activities (Združenie technicko-športových činností). In 1993, the Slovak Union of Reserve Soldiers (Slovenský zväz vojakov v zálohe) was established as an independent organisation with its own legal personality.

The name Slovak Association of Reservists better captures the character and mission of our organisation. It clearly conveys that this is a platform bringing together reservists and supporting the development of their professional, social, and defence-related activities.

The word “association” also reflects the modern and open character of the organisation – a community of people who jointly cultivate the values of service, preparedness, and civic responsibility.

The Mission Remains the Same

It is important to emphasise that the name change does not alter the organisation’s core mission. We continue to pursue the following objectives:

A Clearer Identity for the Future

The name change is therefore above all a step towards greater clarity, professionalism, and organisational stability. It is an evolution, not a revolution – not a dramatic shift in direction. The new name provides a stronger foundation for building the organisation’s identity and for its continued development in the years ahead.

The Slovak Association of Reservists aspires to be a modern, open, and respected platform for the reservist community in Slovakia.
